The things this scene does to my heart. This entire series is a culmination of stressors, the accumulation of trauma after trauma. We watch Sledge slowly collapsing in on himself, being beaten down by each horror he witnesses, losing bits and pieces of himself with each harrowing experience. You can see the innocence and hope fragmenting, disappearing altogether. And this moment—this altercation, this is the final crack fissuring through his facade of normalcy. We see that he has fully lost himself to this war, to this mentality that has ravaged him and stripped him of his humanity. We look at a boy we knew at the beginning of the series, full of optimism, and suddenly he is animal and unrecognizable. Suddenly he is a war machine, devoid of feeling except the one that will let him destroy fellow human beings.
